Joanna has gone home to heal her broken leg.
The new house staff that is hired to look after the Five are an immensely unpleasant lot.

Unfortunately, Aunt Fanny is also not keeping well and Uncle Quentin takes her to the hospital, leaving the Five at the mercy of the new staff.
The Five run away to Kirrin Island and discover suspicious activity there. An unclaimed trunk is found in the old wreckage and they see someone come for it in the wee hours of the night.
